Social Media Marketing Strategy: Having Fun or Feeling Fearful

Social media marketing strategy planning is fun for those who are naturally inclined to put themselves out there. It is a labor of Hercules like cleaning out the Augean Stables for those not inclined to promote themselves. Some upbringings (pride goeth before a fall) instill in those of us who are just naturally born with such an attitude, like yours truly, with the feeling that social media promotion is like trying to take a stroll with a barbell across our shoulders.

Well, like someone told me, get over it and get on with it so you can be miserable in 5 star hotels and cruising the world’s oceans with a crew of folks you have helped get free.

Luckily for us modest types there are social media marketing strategy steps to take that are set and forget.

…but it is the biggest right now.

To be fair, Facebook is to social media what Microsoft is to the desktop computing marketplace. Your strategy cannot be complete without addressing Facebook and unless you just hate Facebook beyond reason and rationality you need to face up to it, dig in your heels and do what the successful do.

If you think about it, “Dig in and do what the successful do” pretty much covers any and all profit making endeavors, doesn’t it?

Social Media Marketing Strategy: Start Here

Pick One

Pick one and stick with it until you have mastered it. Doing so is the quickest way to six figures.

The worst thing you can do is try to promote on all social media platforms at once. All you will accomplish, almost certainly, is a poor job on all platforms. Shot gunning across all channels is not a social media marketing strategy for success.

Social Media Sites

Here is a list of the social media sites you should start with. How did I pick these? These are the sites folks making more in a month than most folks make in a year are focusing on.

They have the biggest subscriber bases and so the largest market shares.

Since Facebook is the hottest thing running right now, I have two suggestions.

  1. Do not use your personal profile page to promote your business. It is against the terms of use agreement and is kind of like crossing the streams in Ghostbusters. The benefit is not more than the potential downside.
  2. Facebook has a freebie called Blueprint. Blueprint has 50 e-Learning modules for you to go through. Since they want you to quickly become a paying advertiser, I am sure this would benefit you.
  3. Focus. If you want to do Facebook marketing, do Facebook marketing. If you like Twitter then go hang out on Twitter more or less obsessively.

Seems like trying to hit three or more marketing channels at the same time will leave you overwhelmed, ineffectual and upset. Because you are here and reading this, you will not allow this to happen to you.

Most of all, you are going to click on some of the links in this article and take advantage of the free training we offer. As a result, you will see your traffic go up and consequently, you will be more profitable.

Stick to One, But…

The one exception I personally believe to the above admonition to focus is a blog. Your blog in my opinion is where your tribe, those people who are like you and can relate to you, will get to know you.

Writing everyday can be hard. You don’t have to be Longfellow or write a Shakespearian masterpiece each day.

I was guilty of trying to do that.

I did not realize how much I was obsessing over minute details like the Brain in Pinky and the Brain.

The result was that I got frustrated, lost a little bit of my belief and began to avoid that which I love most in life, writing.

Writer’s block was not the problem

The problem was I giving up each day.


  1. Decide On Your Channel.
  2. Go through the free resources those social media outlets have.
  3. Visit this blog for tips and free resources that we provide.
  4. Blog daily.
  5. Market daily.

Which Social Media Outlets Should I look at?

Beside Facebook? Oh, there are several excellent choices. I have already mentioned Twitter but I will lay out the ones I think should be head of the line amongst the choices you look at.

Why do I recommend these for your consideration? Because they have the largest market shares and the greatest number of marketers who have used them to go home and work from there on a permanent basis.

Here they are:

  1. Facebook.

  4. LinkedIn
  5. Instagram
  6. Pinterest

Because each of these channels has its own strengths and quirks, the activities involved will vary greatly. You cannot simultaneously become the darling champion marketing boy in all six channels,  I don’t care who you are.

As I say, stick to one and master it along with your blog and you should find your tribe in short order.

Social media marketing fits the “I cannot define it but I know it when I see it” group of things in the world.

Folks often go a little mumbly when trying to explain social media marketing.

Everyone knows where you do it, though. Defining it clearly may be a problem since there are so many ways to do it but everyone knows where to go to show it to you.

Social media is carried out on:

  1. Facebook
  2. Facebook LIVE
  3. Twitter
  4. Periscope
  5. YouTube
  6. Pinterest
  7. Instagram Marketing
  8. Google+
  9. Meet-Up groups
  10. Snapchat

…and the list goes on and on.

One of my personal favorites is NetVillage.

NetVillage folks are the inheritors of Galacticomm’s MajorBBS/Worldgroup legacy.

Since I ran a good sized Worldgroup system back in the day I am currently working through the logistics of getting one back up and running. But in that I am getting off topic a bit.

What Is Social Media Marketing

Social media marketing refers to the process of gaining website traffic or attention through social media sites. Social media marketing programs usually center on efforts to create content that attracts attention and encourages readers to share it with their social networks. A corporate message spreads from user to user and presumably resonates because it appears to come from a trusted, third-party source, as opposed to the brand or company itself. Hence, this form of marketing is driven by word-of-mouth, meaning it results in earned media rather than paid media. –Mashable

To put it more simply, you use sites where people hang out sharing things you find interesting. Sometimes you will share things related to your business. If folks find it interesting, they share it to their networks building awareness of your brand.

To do it correctly requires a light touch. Ham fisted post spamming will only hurt you.

Social Media

Social media as a term covers a lot, and I do mean a lot, of territory. Defining social media marketingmarketing for this media may lend itself to a paragraph or two but not so with defining the channel itself.

There are simply too many options and that is a happy problem to have. There is a channel to suit everyone’s tastes.


social media marketingTwitter, for instance, limits you to 140 characters which I think is absolutely awesome. It keeps you from what Stephen King refers to as “diarrhea of the word processor.”

Twitter makes you get to the point. It forces clarity of thought and precise communication.

Yes, I am a BIG fan.


social media marketingFacebook, on the other hand, will allow you to post status updates with photos and article links attached and you can hold forth as if you were trying to write sacred texts by which the next generation is to live.

You have to be careful because while it is true that the more you tell the more you sell, you can overdo it.

Social Media Marketing Strategy

Lots of new entrepreneurs when starting out are in a hurry.

They are in a hurry to get the word out. They are in a hurry to reach so many thousands of likes or shares or retweets.

They are often in a situation where they are wanting to become profitable overnight and that can lead to mistakes.

Pick One

Pick one. Pick one strategy to master and spend your time on it.

Which one?

Cannot do any better than just picking the one you currently spend the most time on. Clearly, you like it, so why not start there?

Decide on a channel.

Learn everything you can about it.

Miss out on a few scintillating conversations about that cute as kitten britches baby with whom you have no connection in the real world and learn more about your channel of choice.

Some things to keep in mind.

You want your bookmarks shared? You need to share other’s bookmarks.

Tell me, why would someone share your bookmarks if you don’t share theirs? Some folks worry they might miss a sale or a customer if they share someone else’s bookmark. I hate to say it, but with that attitude you are probably not going to build significantly profitable relationships with others.

What was it Cinderella’s mom told her on her deathbed? Have courage and be kind. Exercise just a little bit of faith.

By sharing something you find helpful.

When you put quality content, true ‘value’ out there that solves a problem for your reader, your authority in your field increases.

Sometimes that means sharing others’ content.

Sometimes that means sharing others’ value postings.
